DULCIMERS
If you're unfamiliar with a dulcimer their frets are laid out to play a major scale (Do - Re - Mi - Fa.....) making them quite easy to play. Traditionally they had a body that extended the full length of the neck and were played on the lap. The type I usually make which look more like a guitar are often called a "stick dulcimer." They're a perfect instrument for a youngerster who has never played, or is just learning to play.
All dulcimers come with a songbook. The book has over 50 well known traditional folk songs (including Working on the Railroad, Home on the Range, Amazing Grace, Camptown Racers, O' Christmas Tree, etc.) that you can play "by number." There is no need to know notes, or understand music. Each word has a number over it. You just hold down the melody string at that fret and strum the strings. Even young children can learn to play songs on this instrument.

FWIW (For What It's Worth) 3 String Cigar Box Dulcimer - SOLD
$
65.00
"FWIW" 3 String Dulcimer This one got a little embelishment in the form of
stencils after I realized one of the holes was cut a little off center and had to be
corrected. I decided that it wasn't too bad and could still be sold "for what
it's worth." A nickel inlayed in the headstock seemed to go along with that
theme, so a well worn 1924 Indian head nickel was pressed into service. Those
couple changes turned this from an instrument that was a little screwed up into
one of my favorites.
It's currently strung with the bottom 3 strings from a guitar and tuned A-A-D, but tunings are easy to change if you'd like to go with a more traditional dulcimer tuning like D-A-D.

2 String "Macanudo" Cigar Box Dulcimer - SOLD
$
60.00
This is a super simple cigar box dulcimer. It has just 2 strings, so the neck is thin enough for just about any hand. It has a short scale, so even those with a shorter reach will have an easy time with this. In other words, this would be a great instrument for a child. It's certainly not limited to children though, any more than a ukulele is limited to children.
