                    CIGAR BOX GUITARS

4 String "Cohiba" Cigar Box Guitar
                    $
                    180.00

This is one sweet little guitar.  It was built around a super nice and large Cohiba cigar box.  The neck is made from virgin hardwood (not rescued lumber).  It has a 24" scale, which I find is a really comfortable length for cigar box guitars.

The strings are the bottom four from a guitar and are tuned as such, so if you can play a 6 string guitar, you can play this.  All the chords will transfer right over, just leave off the top two strings. The action is plenty low for fingering chords.

This guitar comes equipped with a piezo pickup, so you'll be able to plug it into your amp if you need more volume.

One interesting thing about this guitar is that the cigar box originally had nice metal hinges and clasp, so I was able to build t is guitar in such a way so that the box still opens.  So you can throw your chord charts, picks, or whatever else in there while you're not playing.

3 String Cigar Box Guitar with Texas License Plate Resonator
                    $

License plate resonators are one of my  favorites. I don't often give them soundholes as well, but on this one I offset the license plate a bit and you get a drain cover soundhole.  I think it's a good look.  Although I call this an electric, it actually has pretty good volume, especially for as thin as the cigar box is.  The license plate resonator  actually does seem to do actually do the job it was meant to do.

So here's the whole story.  The neck is a piece of salvaged wood.  If I remember correctly, it was sliced off a piece of an old bed. It was passed through the flames for the purpose of its purification (actually... it was just to bring out the wood grain).  It has 20 metal frets and stamped fret markers.  It has a 23" scale which is a bit shorter than a standard guitar, but a really nice size for a cigar box guitar. It has a piezo pickup, so if you need more volume or just want to add some effects for playing some dirty blues, you can run it through your amplifier.

The action is just a little bit high, but still plenty low for fingering.  I'll send along a couple alternate bridges that you can experiment with.  I'll also send along my lap steel kit.  You get a taller bridge and a brad to slide behind the nut to raise up the strings, and a glass slide.

As of now, it's strung up with the bottom 3 strings of a guitar and tuned to an open G. (Same as the bottom 3 strings of a banjo) If you want to tighten up the D string to an E, your guitar chords will switch right over. (Just ignore the fingering for the top 3 strings)  It makes a great travel guitar.  It doesn't matter if you beat it up a bit, these things just look better the more beat up they get.  Since the parts come from the hardware store, you're very unlikely to break anything.

3 String "Upman" Cigar Box Guitar/Banjo - SOLD
                    $

This guitar started out life as a shelf...  well, it probably started out as a tree, and THEN a shelf which I pulled from a construction dumpster.  Not sure what kind of wood it is, but it's made a few nice instruments.  I paired it up with a square H.Upman cigar box for a real simple 3 string guitar. It's currently tuned like the bottom 3 strings of a guitar, so if you know guitar chords, they transfer right over.  You just leave off the top 3 strings.  If you know banjo, give that first tuning peg a turn and loosen the first string from an E to a D and you've got a 3 string banjo. This guitar has a full 25" inch scale and 18 metal frets.  That little H.Upman box has quite a nice sound too, perfect for some front porch pickin'.

3 String "Romeo y Julieta" Electric Lap Steel Guitar - SOLD

This is the second in the series of lap steel guitars mentioned above. Again the neck was sliced off a that same piece of shelving.  This one uses a more reserved Romeo y Julieta cigar box and a couple nickel soundholes. Like the other one, this was specifically made to be played on the lap and has high action, and a
square neck.  The "frets" are just scores in the neck that have been dyed with
some varnish.  The fret markers along it's slightly longer 23" scale are carpet tacks from an estate sale.  A piece of an old umbrella style clothes line got pressed into service as the nut. Nestled under the bridge (a screw & nut salvaged from somewhere) is a piezo pickup, so you can run this through your amp for more volume or effects.  It's currently strung with the top 3 strings from a guitar which gives it a deep rich tone.  Comes with a glass slide.

I got a hankerin' one day to build a lap steel guitar.  I cut a slice off an old shelf board, and paired it up with a cigar box and kitchen junk.  I liked it so much I built two more.  The neck from this one is sliced off that same shelf board.  It has a super colorful Cuesta-Rey cigar box and a couple brass sound holes.  This was specifically made to be played on the lap.  It has high action, and a square neck.  The "frets" are just scores in the neck that have been dyed with some varnish.  The fret markers along it's 21" scale are carpet tacks from an estate sale.  A piece of an old umbrella style clothes line got pressed into service as the nut. Nestled under the bridge is a piezo pickup, so you can run this through your amp for more volume or effects.  It's currently strung with the top 3 strings from a guitar which gives it a deep rich tone.  Comes with a glass slide.
